Does your dog wake you up at night with scratching, licking and/or chewing sounds? If so, you are not alone! Almost 10% of dogs worldwide are affected with atopic dermatitis. Atopic dermatitis is an inflammatory skin disease most likely triggered by environmental allergies. Usually the dog's skin becomes itchy and thus becomes red, raw and irritated from scratching. Hairloss, skin and/or ear infection may be seen concurrently. It drives our dogs crazy and, frankly, us crazy!
Well, thanks to Zoetis, it may all be in the past!
Zoetis came out with a new, innovative therapy to treat atopic dermatitis, Cytopoint.
Cytopoint is a biological therapy, non-drug treatment, in the form of a single injection. A single injection can provide on average 4-8 weeks of relief, giving the skin time to heal and us a good night sleep! How can a non-drug treatment treat this condition?
Well, the injection contains antibodies that are very similar to the ones our dog's have. It neutralizes one of the main proteins that sends "itch" signals to the brain, thus, reducing scratching. Is it safe for my dog?
Yes! Cytopoint is an antibody, not
a drug or pharmaceutical treatment. It is naturally broken down and recycled in the body. It is not processed by the liver or kidney, unlike drug treatments, which often are. Therefore, there is no need to come in for the biannual liver and kidney screen that usually accompanies drug treatments, saving you time and money.
Cytopoint can be used on all dogs, even those with previously diagnosed diseases and with most medications.
Although Cytopoint gives 4-8 weeks of relief, every dog is different. Please monitor your dog during treatment and re-dose when your dog starts to scratch.
Please call (213) 352-1252 to schedule an appointment to see if Cytopoint is right for your dog!
